Australia-Cuba Friendship Society meeting
The Australia-Cuba Friendship Society aims to promote and encourage friendship, understanding, trade and other exchange between the people of Australia and Cuba.
We organise a variety of politico-cultural events during the year culminating in the December-January Work/Study Brigade to Cuba. This is a three-week visit to Cuba focusing on political, economic, cultural and social aspects of Cuba. The ACFS supports humanitarian projects in Cuba. An ACFS priority is to end the US blockade of Cuba.
The ACFS meets at 6.30pm on the first Thursday of every month (except January) at the NSW Teachers' Federation building, Level 1, 33 Mary Street, Surry Hills. Meetings are open to all friends of Cuba and those interested in finding out more about Cuba.
Membership of the ACFS is $20 ($10 unwaged) per year. Here is our membership form. There is also a western suburbs branch whose meetings are conducted in Spanish. There are also many other branches of the ACFS around Australia. See below for their contact details.
To contact us, write to secretary@sydney-acfs.org or PO Box K364, Haymarket NSW 1240.
The next meeting of the ACFS is Thursday August 5, 6.30pm, NSW Teachers' Federation building, Level 1, 33 Mary Street, Surry Hills.

Rally for refugee rights
STAND UP FOR REFUGEES - PROTEST
LET THE BOATS LAND, CLOSE ALL DETENTION CENTRES
On World Refugee Day in June thousands of us marched through the streets of Melbourne other capital cities to "Say no to another Tampa election". But that is just what we are getting. Instead of welcoming refugees to this country as we should, both major parties are bickering about how we can "stop the boats" - boats of people fleeing persecution and misery that in many cases Australia had a role in causing.
We need to take to the streets again. The "stand up for refugees" rallies in the lead up to the election will be a chance for us to provide an alternative to the racist, inhumane policies being put forward by the Liberals and Labor. We will be demanding that refugee boats should be allowed to land in Australia, which should be welcoming people seeking asylum, not locking them up in hellish detention camps.
Don't let the racists be the only ones who are heard in this election. Join the rally, bring your friends, family and co-workers. Send a message that there are people in this country prepared to take a stand in defense of refugee rights.

Rally for same-sex marriage rights
On August 13, 2004, same-sex marriage was banned in Australia. This made Australia the only first world industrialised nation to have banned same-sex marriage. As a result, homosexuals are considered second-class citizens in Australia. These federal laws discriminating on the basis of sexual preference are a disgrace.
Repeal the ban on same sex marriage!
